Men’s Shed
Men's Shed - More Than Just a Shed
The Men's Shed is one of the unique and rewarding programs offered through the Aurora Seniors Centre. While the name suggests woodworking, a Men's Shed is really about building friendships, purpose, confidence, and community.
The Men's Shed movement began in Australia in the 1990s and has since grown into an international network of more than 3,000 Men's Sheds worldwide. Today, there are approximately 25 Men's Sheds in Ontario, and Aurora is proud to be home to one of them.
Founded in August 2023, the Aurora Men's Shed (AMS) has grown from a handful of curious members into a thriving group of more than 55 men—and we're still growing.
A Men's Shed provides retired and semi-retired men with a welcoming place to gather, learn, laugh, volunteer, and support one another. For many, retirement can bring unexpected challenges, including loneliness, loss of routine, and reduced social connections. The Men's Shed offers a safe, relaxed environment where friendships naturally develop over a cup of coffee, shared stories, and plenty of good humour.
No two meetings are ever quite the same.
Our members enjoy guest speakers, travel presentations, quizzes, discussions, demonstrations, light exercise, and plenty of opportunities to learn something new. Every activity is shaped by the interests of the members themselves, making the Shed a true grassroots organization where everyone has a voice.
And, of course, there is always time for coffee, conversation, and solving at least a few of the world's problems!
Throughout the year, we also enjoy seasonal activities such as Bocce during the summer and Carpet Bowling in the winter. Recently, our resident chef even hosted a hands-on cooking demonstration for some of our more "culinary challenged" members. Besides learning a few new skills, everyone enjoyed the meal—and many of us went home with leftovers that lasted another couple of meals!
While fellowship is at the heart of what we do, giving back to the community is equally important.
Aurora Men's Shed members have proudly volunteered in numerous community initiatives, including the Poppy Campaign, the Salvation Army Christmas Kettle Campaign, Seniors' Expos, the Town of Aurora's Canada Day Parade, Aurora Town Square events, CHATS community programs, local scavenger hunts, and fundraising efforts supporting organizations such as the Aurora Food Pantry and the KIND Program.
Retirement doesn't mean our skills, experience, or desire to contribute have disappeared. In many ways, it simply means we now have more time to give back. That shared desire to remain active, connected, and useful is one of the strongest bonds that unites our members.
Whether it’s pouring rain, snowing, or beautiful sunshine, we gather every Monday and Friday. Come along for either or both days, because community and friendship never take a day off!
One of our proudest moments came this year when the Aurora Men's Shed was honoured with the 2026 Town of Aurora ‘Community Safety Award'. The recognition came as a complete surprise, but it was deeply appreciated. More than anything, it acknowledged the collective efforts of our members and the positive contribution they continue to make throughout our community.
As for the future...
Who knows?
By the time you read this, we'll likely have finished helping marshal another ‘Canada Day Parade’, welcomed a few new members, shared another pot of coffee, solved a few more of life's problems, and probably created a few new ones to laugh about together.
After all, that's what a Men's Shed is really about—friendship, purpose, laughter, learning, and giving back.
If you're a retired or semi-retired man looking for companionship, conversation, new experiences, and an opportunity to make a difference, we'd be delighted to have you join us.
You don't need any special skills.
Just bring yourself.
We'll supply the coffee... and probably a few stories too.
